The Path to Self-Discipline: The Montessori Approach... more |
|
We tend to think that if we want to have disciplined children then we must exert some kind of control over them so that in the end they bow to our superior strength. We do not expect self - discipline to arise spontaneously in children.
Maria Montessori observed that discipline does in fact arise spontaneously if we grant the child freedom rather than imposing control – come and find out more about this apparent contradiction.

January 05 - 08, 26th International Montessori Congress, Chennai |
Come to Chennai!
The Montessori community the world over gathers itself in an international Congress once in four years to look anew at the responsibility of educating children for a holistic life in a changing world. The 25th International Montessori Congress under the auspices of AMI was held in Sydney, Australia in 2005.
The unique opportunity of hosting the next Congress falls to India. Chennai will host the 26th International Montessori Congress at Kalakshetra, an organisation which was started by Rukmini Devi Arundale. This has historical significance, since Dr. Montessori first came to India, to Chennai, at the invitation of George and Rukmini Arundale. The Congress will be held from Monday, Jan 05 to Thursday, Jan 08, 2009.
At this moment in the history of the Montessori movement, the centenary year, it is time to reflect and look within, so that the message of education as an assistance to life becomes truly intrinsic to the work of the educator.
The theme of the Congress is Sādhanā, reflective practice, spontaneous living. Looking to both its universality and locality, we have chosen sādhanā as the theme for the Chennai Congress to establish the simplicity and profundity of the Montessori message.
As the child develops, the actions of the body and mind are knitted together in creating the fabric of the self. Practitioners, young and old, must engage in the thoughtful practice of central Montessori principles in everyday life. Through our every conscious action we must seek to live our theory.
Sādhanā encompasses this simple but vast idea. We hope to explore some of its shades and textures in the Congress. We believe that the Chennai Congress will promote inner reflection and lead to meaningful outward action, purposeful work directed selflessly towards the common good.
There are many significant threads that seem to be coming together at the Congress in India. We look forward to welcoming interested people from different walks of life to India, to help make this event meaningful. We hope the gathering will enable each participant to look afresh at what we need to do for the child of today and the society of tomorrow.
